Eminem – Despicable Freestyle.
April 27, 2010

Eminem – Despicable Freestyle. Download HERE.

To be completely honest with you, we’ve kind of missed Em.

Not because he’s been gone … but because he just didn’t have that fire we grew up respecting. Even though his last album, Relapse, debuted at number one, ended up selling almost 2 million domestic copies and ultimately got him two Grammys, we thought there was something missing.

Then he came along by making an appearance on Drake’s “FOREVER” track to shut us the hell up.

The freestyle above has got us excited again. While he may not have anything to prove to any of us, it’s good to see that he’s keeping the ball rolling.

Note: in case you didn’t notice, Marshall lays down some fire over the beats to Drake’s “Over” and Lloyd Banks’ “Beamer, Benz or Bentley.”

Dude Royal: He’s Just That Kewl Negro.
April 8, 2009

Mikey Rocks x Dude Royal x Hollywood Holt- This Shit is Easy. Download HERE.

The above track was released a few weeks ago, featuring Mikey Rocks of The Cool Kids and Dude Royal.  You’re probably thinking “who’s Dude Royal” Well, as any trip to his MySpace of Facebook page will show you, Dude Royal is not your run of the mill rapper.

Michael “Dude Royal” Hooks resides in Encino, CA, and he’s the son of the Prison Break producer. He cites Gucci Mane has his only influence and his band interest is “befriending white girls around the world”.

Oh, did we mention the beat for “This Shit is Easy” is a Dude Royal original?  Now you’re definitely intrigued.

Very few hands have held a copy of his first unreleased album, Loopdy Doops, Woops, & Swoodles (download it HERE.) On this album, Hooks takes on three different rap personas: Vader Ganchos, Carey Skywalker, and of  course Dude Royal.  The short tracks and funky beats grow on you, just ask anyone in the Valley or Ann Arbor.

Through various connections, Dude landed in the studio with Mikey Rocks and booked a performance at SXBW.  Having his foot officially in the door of legitimate hip-hop, Dude Royal has stepped up his dedication and is currently working on his sophomore album, 818s & Heartbreaks.

Only time will tell whether Dude Royal can reach rap royalty … but he has certainly made big strides. You can be assured that he will not lose that “kewl negro” sound that has gotten him this far.

Hit the jump for early Dude Royal tracks and of course the tracklist. We haven’t done our job if you don’t.

March 29, 2009

It appears to be Youtube video night here at KTBN, and yes, this is more footage from SXSW, but after a watching it twice we deemed it postable material.

Aided by Exile’s beatboxing (sometimes he doesn’t even need his tables, he’s just that ill), these four cats freestyle in the rain, because why the hell not, its SXSW.

Every Tuesday is Flip it with Cory at RapRadar, and this week, the Young Gunz (no not the group), but son of “Deja Vu-Uptown Baby” legend Peter Gunz goes in on the latest 50 Cent track.

The freestlye environment seems to be where Cory thrives at this stage of his career, but we’ll see if he can fine tune his flow and put out a succesful album.  In case you missed last week’s edition, Cory does his thing over Kanye’s “Amazing.”

But then again who hasn’t?

Ash hops on some old school Rakim and drops yet another freestyle, although this one is not 20 minutes long.  Guess the kid is trying to prove himself to all his haters out there before his album drops.

Speaking of the album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle, which drops on everyone’s favorite holiday, 4/2o, it is apparently quite dope and will be an enjoyable album to listen to.

Melo-X- Day-N-Nite Remix.

Mel0-X- Google Alerts (Nite-n-Day MeLo-eclipse). Download HERE.

There have been countless remixes to the already classic CuDi track “Day-N-Night,” but this is the first to not involve Cudders himself.

Brooklyn native Melo-X previewed his remix of this song a couple weeks back, which included a dank little freestyle session with Theophilus London (see video footage below).

Today Melo-X released the full remix through herfection, but it has quickly made its way around and now has landed here for your enjoyment.  He says:

So I decided to Sample Kid Cudi’s Day n nite which I feel is a modern day classic. With all the remixes out I wanted to do the track justice and take it somewhere else.

Justice is done indeed. Check the video below for some cool “work in progress” video.

Asher Roth- 20 Minute Freestyle.
March 2, 2009

Lots of people are still up in the air on Asher Roth.  It’s hard to deny that the young, pot-smoking, white kid from PA has talent, but some people continue to push the Eminiem comparisons on him, and almost expect him to become Em.

We showed you Ash’s “Song Cry” freestyle that he did while over in England.  Well, this freestyle is a little bit longer, as he rips and rhymes over a variety of tracks.

This all happened across the pond on Tim Westwood’s radio show, who like so many others, prodded Asher into rhyming over Em instrumentals and taking some shots at his fellow Cauasian rapper.

Whatever, you think of Asher, it’s hard as shit to freestyle for 20 minutes straight, and some of his lines are very impressive.   Judge for yourselves, if you have the time to spare.

February 24, 2009

If you hadn’t heard of him already, we introduced you to Jay Rock last week, as one of the new voices of West Coast gangsta rap.

In a tribute to 2Pac, he goes hard over Pac’s classic “Can’t C Me.”

The Game beat up G-Unit on 300 Bars and Runnin‘ and here Jay Rock spits 112 nasty bars.  Take a listen and keep an eye out for him in the coming year.

G.O.O.D. music men, Cudders and Martin Louie the King, Junior show off their freestyling skills while premiering their new videos “Day ‘N Nite” and “Welcome to Heartbreak” on BET’s 106 & Park.

Kanye also gives a spirited performance of a guest verse he did on “Maybach Music Part 2” off of Rick Ross’ upcoming album, Deeper than Rap.

Watch the video while you can. BET will most likely pull it from the net before too many people get to enjoy it.

Jay Rock feat. The Game, Gorilla Zoe, and Busta- All My Life (Remix).
February 17, 2009

For Jay Rock, West Coast gangsta rap is all he has known, and ever wanted to know.

Ever since listening to the heavy banging lyrics and sound of Public Enemy in his early days in the Watts, California Nickerson Garden Projects, Jay Rock has wanted to make his own influence in the game.

His mixtapes, Coming to a Hood Near You Vol. 1 and 2, were his first attempts at breaking through and with a deep, baritone voice, his sound can be hard to decipher from The Game himself.

The track “All My Life” originally featured Lil Wayne, but on this new remix he drops Weezy and picks up some West Coast heavyweights to bang with.
